Blueberry Raspberry Shake

Hello my dears! I trust you had a good weekend! Mine was toooooo short!

I wanted to say thank you for buzzing my Kung Pao Chicken into the Top 9 over the weekend though! So very much appreciated! πŸ™‚

Just so you all know the cooking class at Sur La Table was fun, you will see a post later this week showing you all the yummy rustic recipes we made. Definitely recipes that anyone can cook and have a great comforting and flavorful result! Stay tuned…

So lately I have been telling you guys that I have to get more protein into my diet. I have gotten SO bad about it as I have gotten older.

My taste buds have changed and evolved into liking more vegetable dishes than meat dishes. When I lived in the Midwest I had meat with every single meal. I mean every.single.meal.

Now? I am lucky to have meat end up on my plate 2 times a week.

The meat is different out on the East Coast and I think that has really changed the way I eat. Don’t get me wrong when I go back to visit Kansas, I am definitely always seen stuffing a pulled pork sandwich in my face from Gates BBQ almost the instant I get off the plane. πŸ˜‰

ANNYYYWAAYYYS…

In my effort to try and integrate more protein into my diet, I am going to be having a lot of smoothies and shakes that have protein powders in them. I am a bit skeptical I have to admit, but Patrick is assuring me that it will be OK.

I have always been under the impression that protein shakes are for people who want to build muscle, which I DO NOT.

No thank you…to being a body builder

I have been reading up a little bit and it looks like there is more benefits to protein than just getting more in my diet. I work out 5 days a week (4 days gym/insanity/weight training, and 1 day of dance). From what I have been reading protein will help my muscles recover faster and that is definitely a good thing. Especially as I get older.

Every once in a while I will post my smoothie/shake adventure and how it went. This is my first try!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of frozen blueberries
  • 7-8 fresh raspberries
  • 10 ounces water
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 1 1/2 scoops vanilla whey protein

Put it all in a blender and pulse until you get the consistency that you want. BAM! Breakfast is served!

This blueberry treat tasted pretty good actually. Was definitely something that seemed like a treat (especially since I still can’t have any sweets because of Lent).

I was pleasantly surprised that the shake wasn’t grainy. I was worried it would have a weird texture. It was kind of like drinking blueberry milk that is really reallllly cold. Not too shabby!

Do you have a favorite protein shake? If so, share it with me…I would love to try it!

Love the cup you put it in! And I can tell you Liv would love this Shake. With her crazy dance schedule we do a lot of smoothies so I can put lots of healthy “stuff” into them. Hadn’t thought of adding protein powder! Genius! She’s low on protein consumption, and I think something like this would work. Well done!

Thanks Kim! This would definitely be good for her. With all the dancing she does it is most definitely important that she get the protein she needs! Thanks for stopping by!

I just got a release from my doctor after and operation and will finally be back exercising starting in April. Since I couldn’t I feel like I have lost muscle mass, so I do need to get on board with the protein! The way you described this as cold blueberry milk sure does make me want to try it. I could not think of a better berry blend to use here-yum!

Yay for excising! Man, I dunno how you went without! It is such a big part of my life, I cannot imagine not having a day without some kind of exercise. I am excited for you to get back into it. This shake would definitely be great for you!

My sister has been making a ton of smoothies lately, no protein though. Maybe I can talk her into it. πŸ™‚ Strawberry-banana is one of my all time faves, and I think the more berries the better (props to your blue/rasp combo!) for antioxidants.

I need to get more protein at breakfast time. That’s the one meal that I have a hard time with balancing well. I am curious to know if protein powder is good too… no after taste or anything. If so… I may have to pick some up because I love a smoothie for breakfast. πŸ™‚

I agree that we’re spoiled with excellent meat in the Midwest…but I don’t eat much of it at all. I need to boost my protein intake, too…and your shake looks like a delicious way to start! Hope you’re having a great week, my friend~
