Gates Bar-B-Q

Ever notice that when you travel to places food tends to be one of things you remember the most? Good or bad. I have been to so many different places and the food always ends up being something that sticks in my memory the most.

When I went back to Kansas City to visit family and friends there was 2 places that I knew I had to go because of the food. Gates Bar-B-Q and John’s Space Age Donuts. Let me tell you that these 2 places stick in my brain the most because, well…the food is great!!

I literally landed in KC at about 11:00am and went straight to Gates Bar-B-Q, which is located on The Plaza in KCMO. They have a few other locations but this one happened to be on my way.ย  Now, Gates has kind of a unique culture. It is a Bar-B-Q place that has been around for quite some time and they have kept to all the same traditions they had when they first opened. For example, you have to know HOW to order yourself something at Gates. If you want a beef sandwich, you say “beef on bun”. If you would rather have turkey, it is “turkey on bun”. Get the idea? The other thing you have to keep in mind is that they shout at you from behind the counter. Yes, shout at you. “May I help you?!” Back in the days when there was just one Gates they yelled at you as soon as you walked in the door. I’m not kidding here either haha. Now they will at least wait until they help the person in front of you. So, just make sure you pay attention because if you notice the person in front of you ordering even if you aren’t at the front of the line they WILL say “May I help you?!” and you DO need to answer. I have seen them put people at the back of the line haha. This poor woman and her husband were standing looking at the menu and I ordered my food and the woman behind the counter yells, “May I help you?!”…no answer…”MAY I HELP YOU?!”….nothing….”MAY_I_HELP_YOU?!?!?!”…I leaned over and was like “Maam, she is talking to you”. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyways, so I ordered my lunch which was “Pork on Bun”. I got fries and baked beans with it and 3 different kinds of BBQ sauce. Let me tell you how much my inner fat kid was doing cartwheels. It was fab-u-lous!

I never get food like this anymore so I was SO happy when I was able to sit down and enjoy my meal. Don’t forget the liter of ice tea I got too, which was much needed considering it was about 110ยบ outside.

nomnoms!

Is it sad that the absolute first thing I did when I got off the airplane was go to eat in KC?! Haha I keep telling myself no. Let me live in my little delusional world.

Next stop?! The best darn donut place ever! This is one of those donut shops where you have to be up at the ass crack of dawn to get the really good ones. I was up early enough to get there by 6am to get myself one of my favorite donuts of all time….

THIS…is the glazed twist. It is quite possibly the most heavenly donut you have ever placed on your tongue. It is crisp on the outside but soft and so buttery on the inside. ::dreams:: oh it is just phenomenal. I cannot describe to you how happy of a girl I was when the guy that runs place said, “You don’t look like a regular”. I said, “Well, I used to be but I moved away quite a few years ago so every time I come back to visit I always stop here to get myself a spaceage donut.” He says to me, “Well goodness, I gotta give a free donut to one of my loyal customers who doesn’t even live here anymore.” ๐Ÿ˜€

Happiest girl ever!
