For Someone Who Needs it More Than Me.

So…it is official all…I cut my hair!

This is the 2nd time I have donated my hair…however this time I have donated it to a different charity than I did previously.

My first donation quite a few years back when I was in college was for Locks of Love. Which is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.

I was so happy to give my hair to a child that needed it much more than I did.

This time I decided to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

Their program started in 2006 and is geared towards women with cancer. They are partnered with the American Cancer Society which is also a non-profit organization. According to their website they have donated 18,000 free real-hair wigs to the American Cancer Society (keep in mind that each pony tail that is sent in makes up only a portion of the wig).

You have to have at least 10″ to donate to Locks of Love and Pantene Beautiful Lengths you have to have 8″. I had 10″ so I could donate to either one.

Believe me it is a lot of hair. I mean 10″! It takes a long time to grow that out. I am lucky that my hair tends to grow a little faster, but it still takes a while. And believe me it is hard to part with it…women get attached to their hair. It is part of being a woman, all you ladies out there know what I am talking about here ;-).

However, when you think about where it is going and why you are doing it…it really makes it worth giving up.

There are so many different reasons why I wanted to donate my hair. Most of you know that I am a big supporter for causes that help women with cancer.

Last year I did the 3-day 60 mile Susan G. Komen walk for the cure in Boston.

It was one of the most exhilarating and moving events of my life. There were SO many courageous women with cancer that were walking. I was so happy that I could give back to them with all the money I raised for cancer research for the walk, I was able to raise over $2,500 for that particular event!

To be able to walk side by side with those outstandingly brave women, was one of the most rewarding and emotional times of my life and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in this world.

Now I have a chance to give back again…maybe not with money this time, but with my hair.

It makes me feel so good to know that someone will benefit from me sending in my hair to this organization.

A woman will be able to feel like a woman again with a new wig because of my donation. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me to be able to provide something like that to someone who I don’t even know, and probably will never know.

Some people ask, “how could you cut all your hair?”, “why would you want to cut it all off like that?”….

Why?

For.Someone.Who.Needs.It.More.Than.Me.

It’s only hair, it will grow back.

Being able to provide a woman struggling with cancer the opportunity to smile because she gets to have hair again, makes cutting every inch of my hair off completely worth it.

If any of you have ever thought about donating your hair but were too afraid to…take the plunge. It is so worth it and I promise your hair will grow back πŸ˜‰

Have a great weekend everyone!

You’re awesome – and it’s true, it does grow back! I lost my hair a few years ago from cancer treatment (I had long hair at the time, so I was able to donate it before it fell out) and a few friends cut their hair to donate – it’s such a selfless, generous, incredible act and I was so grateful to have such amazing friends. So thank you – you DO rock!

Oh Jessica, I am so sorry to hear that you lost your hair, but how amazing of you to give it before you lost all of it. So amazing of you! Thank you πŸ™‚

You look even more more gorgeous with your hair short. I wanted to cut all mine off for summer, but I don’t think I have enough to donate. My nice did that last summer and I just thought it was the best thing ever. Keep up raising the awareness, no one is immune from this ugly disease. Hope all is well with you. My apologies for being absent, I’ve been so busy working. Yuck I hate work, lol.

Oh Gina! Don’t worry about it! I always love seeing you notes though when I get them. For some reason you feel like a part of my family…anyways thank you so much for the nice compliment! I have had family and friends tell me for years that I look better with short hair. Now I have the new do for the summer time. Still feels a little weird because I just did, but I am sure I will get used to it. Miss you! Have a great weekend!

You are awesome, and you look gorgeous with that bob. It is such a great cause, my niece did it last summer. Thanks for helping with awareness, no one is immune from cancer’s ugly reach. Hope all is well with you.

Thanks so much Roxana! Some people are definitely more comfortable with cutting their hair than others. I just look at it as, it will only be a couple months that it will be real short and if I really want to go longer again, it will come back. πŸ˜‰

You look adorable! I love that you did this. I’m going to show this post to my daughter. Her hair is WAY too long and I’ve been trying to get her to donate it.

You look darling!!! And what a selfless thing to do. My neighbor has done two of those 60 mile breast cancer walks…and was just diagnosed herself about a month and a half ago. She is lucky that she caught it early. You are the BEST!

yay! how cool. i didn’t know of this organization! i dontated in March to Locks of Love, like 15 inches worth…I’m still in “short-do” trauma, I think! I’ve never had my hair this short! Your new short-do looks super cute! πŸ™‚

You look beautiful! Not only because of the hair, but because of that great attitude and your giving nature!

What a great and fantastic thing to do! And you’ve gone and done it twice! I’ve seen the effects of charities like these on two of my aunts and one of my uncles that lost their hair due to cancer treatments (three other relatives suffered from stress related alopecia – we’re really quite shite at keeping our hair in this family!) and they hated being seen wherever they went as a person that has cancer because of their lack of hair and many wigs weren’t made to put over hairless heads and so itched like madness. They all felt unattractive which as a result affected everything they did. Charities similar to those you mention helped them regain self-esteem, pride, hope and assurance by a simple gift of hair! Even though most of the charities are for women, they were also willing to help my uncle out (for him it took a long time to admit that not having hair affected him because he was a man and men shouldn’t care if they lose their hair for whatever reason apparently). I have seen the effects of these charities and it takes special, humble people like you to make this possible!
