Water Cake
Dear New England Drivers,
It is not necessary to drive 12 mph to work when there is a little precipitation on the ground. It is also not safe to SLAM on your brakes as often as you do in slippery conditions. If you just use the pedal on the right to make the car accelerate…you should be good to go.
Sincerely,
A fellow New England Commuter
Holy cow, heeellllooo ice storm! I drove in this morning and it took me an hour and 20 minutes to get into work. It normally takes me about 35 minutes haha. WOW! Thanks Mother New England! Thank goodness I am inside now, for all of you who are located in the New England area, pleeease drive safe!
This recipe is something my mom showed me. She said my great grandmother used to make it and I always love sharing recipes like that with people. This cake is crunchy and gooey and delicious and is the perfect thing for a chocolate craving!
Ingredients for Chocolate Water Cake:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup white sugar
- 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
- powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 3/4 cups hot water
In a medium bowl, combine flour, white sugar, 2 tablespoons cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth. Spread in ungreased 9 inch square baking pan.
Combine brown sugar and 4 tablespoons cocoa; sprinkle over batter in the pan. Pour hot water over all; do not stir.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 35 to 40 minutes. Serve warm.
It might be hard to tell in this picture above, but the bottom of the cake ends up being like a layer of gooey chocolate and then the top ends up being close to a brownie texture. Yum!
Now, I know this isn’t the most gorgeous looking piece of cake above haha. If you let it cool for a bit it will set up nicely and you can cut nice slices of cake, but I just wanted to dig right in…let me tell you, it is great at any temperature! Enjoy!

This cake looks awesome. I am in DE and dreading my trip into work today (not because of the ice/snow – but because of the people who seem to forget that we get this kind of weather ever. year.) Sigh.
Back to the cake and happy thoughts!

Thanks so much! Yes, please do be careful on the roads with all those crazy drivers out there. I would think that living in New England people would be USED to this by now…NOPE! haha π
Kori
Gooey and delicious, my mom and grandma make this too! We’ve always called it “Mud Cake” though. So fun for chocolate lovers π
RavieNomNoms
Oh how wonderful that your family used to do this too Kori! I love sharing things like that with others! Mud cake is a very good term for that cake haha

I’m with ya on the unexperienced weather drivers. It drives me nuts! Okay this water cake takes me right back to living at home. My mom would make something similar and I loved it! I think it’s been 10 years or so since I have had this dish. I’m so excited to make this. Thanks!

Hi Roxana, You are most welcome! I am so glad that I could be of help to you. I hate when that happens, when you find something you really like and then you can’t find the recipe for it. Problem solved on this one! π

Carlyn
this seems like such an interesting idea! I love the fact that it’s low fat, too! What do you think if I put a piece of parchment paper on the bottom of the pan before putting the batter in so that once the cake is all baked and cooled I inverted the cake onto a platter so that the gooey chocolate is on the top (instead of on the bottom)? Would it work?
RavieNomNoms
I think that’s a really interesting idea! I never even thought of that. You would definitely want to make sure and cool the cake completely, maybe even stick it in the fridge before you flip it. Bc it suuure it gooey haha. Gald you liked it!
The Mom Chef
WOW. That’s gonna cover it all. I just came over from Cake Whiz’s site to see exactly how the original was done. It’s an amazing looking cake and one I’ll be trying. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
