Baked Cinnamon Swirl French Toast
Happy New Year!! I hope you all had a great time with whatever you did for New Year’s!
The performance that I told you about went quite well, we actually have another performance this weekend on the 7th. Busy already in 2012! Sooooo unlike me π
This recipe I am sharing with you today you are going to love, especially if you like sweet stuff for breakfast. I personally don’t really like sweet things for breakfast… ::audience gasps:: I KNOW I KNOW, it is weird!
I think it is because when I was little, and I think I told you all this before, I was allergic to artificial colors and flavors. So obviously, this REALLY limited what I could have when I was a child.
All those colorful cereals and candy? ::shakes head and points at self with thumbs:: This girl couldn’t have them.
I grew up eating cheerios and wheat toast. To be honest, I am glad I grew up eating that way because I know it saves my already growing waistline as I get older. I just don’t have a taste for SUPER sweet things.
Now, I know my blog is littered with sweet treats, but I almost never have an entire helping of any of it. That is what Patrick is for π
Anyways, this recipe is a uber-sweet baked french toast casserole…it is really good. I only had a very small portion of it because it was so sweet, but I have to say it was very delicious!
This is my Mom’s recipe, adapted from this recipe.
Ingredients for Toast:
- 16 ounce of your favorite cinnamon roll recipe (cooked with frosting of course), cut into cubes
- 6 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups half-and-half
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Cinnamon sugar or confectioners’ sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- Pure maple syrup
Preheat oven to 350ΒΊ
Place your cinnamon roll cubes into a greased 3-quart baking dish. Beat your eggs, half-and-half, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla in a bowl with a whisk. Pour this mixture over the bread cubes and cover the dish.
Let this sit for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator, you can let it sit over night if you please.
Uncover your dish and dot with butter. Bake for 1 hour or until golden brown.
Serve your toast with warm maple syrup and a sprinkle of powdered sugar.
How pretty is that?!
Now, if you will please excuse me, I am going to pout a little bit about having to be back at work again after such a long nice break, hehe π

This french toast sounds fantastic. I lived off cereal as a kid but by choice would always have my mom buy me kix or special K so as an adult I eat frosted flakes lol if I’m craving cereal. I love breakfast but never eat it so this would be a perfect brunch dish for my house. π
RavieNomNoms
Thanks so much!! That is how I ate it, I was on vacation from work so I wasn’t up early enough to have “breakfast”. Hehe
Jonny
Really??? Jeeez…
RavieNomNoms
Haha what’s that for Jonny??

Don’t like sweet things for breakfast?! Are you crazy!!! Then I guess that means more of the yumminess for me!! Mmmmm
RavieNomNoms

Maggie
Yes, that looks uber sweet, but uber delicious!!! Wow! I am usually more of a savory breakfast person too, but will break down from time to time and bake something tasty for breakfast for the fam. They’d love this one!
RavieNomNoms
I am sure they would! I know my little nephews would be ALL over this! I am right there with ya! Give me some eggs and hot sauce and I am good to go for breakfast π
Tina@flourtrader
Your French toast looks delicious. I have yet to try the baking method, but I am sure that this recipe is a great one to start with. Creamy cinnamon sweet-I am in and not just keeping this for breakfast either.
RavieNomNoms
Thank you Tina! Try the baking method, it is yummy!
Emily @ Life on Food
OMG, I can only imagine how good this must taste. I love both cinnamon rolls (my weakness) and French toast. The idea of having frosted cinnamon rolls in a French Toast bake is marvelous.
RavieNomNoms
Well hello Emily! You came to visit! I knew you would enjoy the cinnamon rolls in the French toast π
Ramona
I am like you, I don’t care for overly sweet stuff for breakfast either. I’m more of a savory girl. Then there is the occasion that something looks really yummy like your french toast and I have to dive in! I also loved that you baked it so you don’t have to stand by the stove and baby sit it. My kind of cooking. π Have a great week! ~ Ramona
RavieNomNoms
Hi Ramona! Yes maam, simplicity is the game! I hope you have yourself a lovely week as well! π
Jen Roque
Of course I just went back on the wagon after the New Year (low carb dieting), I will have to dream of this until my cheat day! π
RavieNomNoms
Oh you are a Saint! I could never do that Jen! Best of luck with your New Year diet!
Vicki @ WITK
I had a lot of cereal and wheat bread as a kid, I think it helped set me up for a generally healthy lifestyle too. Treats like this are reserved for the weekend and well deserved after a week of cereal and oatmeal. This looks like the perfect saturday brunch!
RavieNomNoms
That is exactly how I feel! I would much rather be good during the week and then reward for myself on the weekend with something like this recipe!
Amy
This sounds amazing! I am craving french toast after reading this post. I like that it is baked, instead of having to stand over the stove.
RavieNomNoms
Yes most definitely! It was super easy and like you said very convenient because you aren’t standing by the stove for a long period of time.
Liz
Oh, my gosh! How amazing is this idea????? My family would LOVE it! But I’m with you…I don’t eat sweets for breakfast…but I think I could manage a small helping for dessert!
RavieNomNoms
Oooo great idea Liz!! This would be a perfect dessert! π
Janet@FCTC
This looks great! I can tell by looking at it though what you mean about it being super sweet. But I would happily inhale a few bites of it and my boys would very happily eat the rest hehe
RavieNomNoms
Haha I hear ya Janet! That is the way I felt about it. I ate a couple bites and then let Patrick have at it. π
Ann
It couldn’t have been fun growing up with allergies. However, I have a vicious sweet tooth that rules my life – I wish I didn’t, but I do. It’s a daily struggle to eat and cook healthy! I love healthy foods, but I naturally gravitate towards junk food….
That being said – the breakfast looks ah-may-zing!
RavieNomNoms
It was pretty tough Ann, but I got used to it as I got older. Thank goodness it doesn’t affect me as much as it did then. You sound just like my Daddy, he has quite a vicious sweet tooth as well π
Patrick
Great job in your performance ,Tiger, and I can’t wait to see you dance again this weekend π
This french toast was super sweet especially once I loaded it up with syrup mmmmm…. Very nom nom nommyyy in my tum tum tummmyyyy hehe

Elyse @The Cultural Dish
Breakfast really is the best meal!! I love this so much! I convinced my family to add baked french toast to their holiday brunch menu – great addition! π
RavieNomNoms
I am glad you like it Elyse! So many people say that breakfast is the best meal, I just hardly ever eat it unless it is the weekend. Horrible I know!
Erin @ Dinners, Dishes, and Desserts
Oh my word, this is amazing! I love sweet stuff for breakfast sometimes, but not everyday π I am a sucker for cinnamon things though, and this is over the top amazing!
Happy New Year to you!

Oh wow, way to improve upon two classics! π I love cinnamon to no end, so this looks delectably perfect.
RavieNomNoms
Thanks very much Kiri! You need to thank my mother for that one, she is the one who created this amazing recipe π
Jenny @ Savour the Senses
Yummmm why do you taunt me with these things!? I want french toast, especially this one!
Carolyn
That looks like a phenomenal breakfast! And what I do, to keep from having too many goodies around, is make half-batches of things like muffins and cookies. Otherwise I don’t think I could keep on writing my blog!
Domestic Fits
I’m the same way about sweets, although I was the kid who had Cookie Crisp cereal (ummm, gross). The weird thing is that every time I bring a dessert to a party, it is a less sugary than most version and people always ask what my secret is to the BEST cream cheese frosting EVER?! Well, half the sugar of most the other ones. Weird how less is more. And, this looks so freaking fantastic.
Stephanie
Oh my, this looks like the best french toast ever! I actually feel the same way about breakfast. I usually prefer savory unless it’s cereal. Though, I do like having pancakes and french toast for dinner! I think I just hate all the sugar first thing in the morning.
Peggy
This sounds amazing! I love French Toast, so this casserole would definitely be a hit in our house =)
Choc Chip Uru
What a fantastic twist (swirl :P) on french toast! I want this for my breakfast sure but also lunch and dinner – you have a fantastic blog here!
The Farmers Wife
Oh my word… This looks positively amazing! I love this recipe, and I know my family would too! Thanks for sharing!
