Cinnamon Chip Scones
Moms are seriously amazing. Aren’t they? They always know just how much love to give you when you need it, or just the right amount of Jell-O when your tummy hurts.
They always know what kind of advice to give you (and are 9 times out of 10 right), even when you think you have it all figured out. They always know what is best for you, even though you hate what that “best for you” is.
I am amazed at Moms. They are patient, wise, overwhelmingly kind and unconditionally loving.
Sometimes I wonder if I could be a Mom…
My friend Becci and I were having this conversation about how scary it can be but also how wonderful at the same time.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying I want to be a Mom right now. I am in no shape or form ready for that kind of a step yet. I mean Patrick and I just moved in together, I’d like to enjoy that first ;-).
It’s just, Moms are so awesome. I would be scared that I would never live up to what my Mom is or does. I suppose if I ever had a daughter, maybe she would think the same thing.
My mom is so many things I can mention, plus so much more. Someday I hope to possess a quarter of the talent my mother has and I wish I could show her how grateful I am for what she has given me over the years…her response is always, “get me some grand-kids and then we can talk.” Even though she HAS 3 grand-babies of her own from my brother (3 boys), haha.
Whooooooaaaa there mama!! Let’s cross one river at a time. She’s a stinker.
One of things I love about my mom, is her love to fill people’s bellies. I suppose that is where I get it ;-). She always has SO much food for people to snack on, ever since I can remember she has been that way.
I still have friends from high school that talk to me about how great it was to come over to our house. “Remember that time after the play/game/dance and we went to your house and your mom fed us…”
Yeeuuup, I remember.
If I ever do have kids, one thing I will always tell them that I remember about my mom the most when it comes to how much she loved to feed people is…
She is the she BEST at making yummy treats for when you wake up in the morning. She is always whipping up scones, muffins, cakes, pancakes, waffles, etc. Everything she makes always turns out awesome on the first try too…how do moms do that?!
This recipe I am sharing with you today is hers. She has been making these scones for quite some time and MAN are they good. She can make 2 batches and they will be gone in 2 days, or less. hehe
They have just the right amount of salt and sweet, NOM. So good!
Ingredients for Scones:
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (if salted butter is used reduced salt to a pinch)
- 1 cup buttermilk (or sour milk, add 1 tablespoon white vinegar and enough milk to make a cup, let sit for 5 minutes)
- 1 package (10 ounces) mini cinnamon baking chips
Topping:
- 3 tablespoons butter melted
- 3 tablespoons Sparkling white sugar, or regular
In a large bowl combine the flour, 1/3 cup sugar. baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in buttermilk just until moistened, do not over mix. Fold in cinnamon chips.
Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead gently 10 to 12 times or until dough is no longer sticky, being careful not to over mix. Divided dough in half; gently pat or roll each portion into a 7 inch circle.
Cut each dough circle into 8 wedge portions. Separate wedges and transfer to a parchment lined baking sheet. Place each wedge back remaking the circle yet leaving a 1/2 inch space between each wedge. Brush the wedges with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake at 425º for 14 to 16 minutes or until lightly brown. Let cool slightly and transfer to cooling rack. Serve warm. 16 Servings
Ok, so how yummy are those? I LOVE how the cinnamon chips like explode whenever they cook. It creates this like “milky way” effect inside of the scone and it is delicious!
Love you Mom ♥

I know…how moms do that! My mom seems to make anything from the simplest ingredients so delicious, effortlessly, too. Now that scones look so good. I would love to have this kind of treat in morning, too 🙂
RavieNomNoms
It is amazing how they do that!
Viviane Bauquet Farre
So crumbly and delicious! I love seeing them displayed in that country cloth too. Authentic and appetizing as ever, Raven!
RavieNomNoms
Thank you Viviane! I love that cloth, but that could be because of the colors. (Blue and White, PSU 😉 )

Where did you find cinnamon chips? That was one of my favorite scones at Starbucks, until I found out each one was about 15 weight watcher points!
RavieNomNoms

Sure thing Carrie!
Tina@flourtrader
I remember the neighborhood baker and a bunch of us kids would always find ourselves over there having some delicious treats. Sadly the chance of that in todays neighborhood is very slim with everyone’s busy lifestyles. This is a sweet tribute to your mom.
These scones do look like something I would enjoy, cinnamon is one of my favorite spices! Milky way effect is something I want to taste. Enjoy the day!
RavieNomNoms
Hi Tina! That is for sure, everyone is running around too much and we lose those moments. All the blogs make me feel like I still have a piece of that. Even though I cannot physically enjoy the treats, it is a break from my day to enjoy a treat.
Have a great day!
Jen
If your mom made me those scones, I would love her too. 😉
I’m on a hunt for scone recipes. This lady at work always makes them and they’re not really that good, except everybody fawns over them because they’re “scones”. It’s my mission to make AWESOME scones and have everyone fawn over me too!
RavieNomNoms
Well I am glad this recipe crossed your path then Jen!
Choc Chip Uru
Loving the addition of cinnamon chips into such a delightful brekkie 😀

What a lovely post and tribute to mothers!! I am a mother, but I have so much still to learn. One of my friends is adopting a baby soon and I told her it’s the hardest job you’ll ever love to do. Everyday motherhood brings ups, downs, doubts and triumphs. I think you will be a wonderful mother someday (when you are ready) because you were raised by a great example of motherhood. 🙂 My mother is the greatest too and that’s also where my love for cooking comes from… I agree with Sandra above.. 3 cheers for mothers and 3 cheers for these great scones. 🙂
RavieNomNoms
What a nice comment Romona! You always have such wonderful things to say. It is so very much so encouraging. Thank you! I have no doubt you are a superb Mom!
Sue Meyers
Since not all Raven’s followers have the privilege to know her mother, I’d like to add a big SERIOUSLY to every comment Raven just made. In addition to being a fabulous cook/chef with an enormous giving heart, she is seriously beautiful, and makes all that great food while managing to stay slim & trim. LOVE YOU LISA!
RavieNomNoms
🙂 Love you Sue!

MAKE SURE YOUR MOM READS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Miss you all.
Maggie
Raven, this was such a beautiful ode to mothers! I loved it. I loooooove being a mom so much and I hope I am all these wonderful things to my daughter too. One thing I know for sure is that I’ll be that mom that has all the treats around! 🙂
My mother-in-law makes some awesome cinnamon chip scones, so this post doubled the fuzzies in my heart. Thanks for a great read and an awesome recipe!

What a sweet tribute to your mom! he sounds awesome. My mom was always the same way – that woman can whip out an appetizer spread on the fly that would give Top Chef a run for their money. Cheers to moms!
RavieNomNoms
Amen to that Laura! Isn’t it amazing?! I wanna know what they drink behind out backs to be able to do that. I want that brew! hehe
Liz
You will be just as wonderful of a mom as your mom is!!! I can just see you baking away for all your children’s friends. Your scones look just perfect 🙂
RavieNomNoms
Thanks Liz! 🙂
Jackie
Such a sweet post! You are going to be an amazing mom when you are ready, and a much better mom for having waited until that time! I seriously struggle with that all the time. Just living up to such a huge responsibility. But it is the people who worry about that make the best parents, it’s amazing how many people don’t take the job seriously enough!
RavieNomNoms
I hear ya on that Jackie! It just seems to be that so many things have changed since I was younger. I feel like I would be more strict with my kids than what some parts are now. Just seems out of hand. Thanks for visiting!
Megan @ Pip and Ebby
Moms ARE the best! So glad you have a keeper. 🙂 What a wonderful recipe to have. The scones look delicious!!
RavieNomNoms

Moms are wonderful and this scone recipe looks so good!! Reminds me of the cinnamon chip scones from Starbucks which I LOVE!
RavieNomNoms
You know I have heard that numerous times now, but I have never had one from Starbucks. That might be because I don’t frequent Starbucks too often haha

These sound yummy! And with that much sugar I wonder if they really are scones? I’ve never had a scone with sugar – wonder if there’s another name for them?
