Orange Scented Buttermilk Scones

I feel like I haven’t posted in like a week…wait, I haven’t! haha…things have been SO busy! Thanksgiving was wonderful and very low key, which I enjoyed VERY much. I was able to enjoy it with my parents, Patrick, and some of our neighbors and it was a very lovely, and stuffed, Thanksgiving.

I also was able to meet Patrick’s bother and his wife. We went out for dinner in NYC. Very interesting place we went to called the Gotham Bar & Grill. A tad on the expensive side (*ahem* with tip about $600 for 4 people, just a TAD on the expensive side πŸ˜‰ ). It was really nice to meet them though!

The following day we went to the TSO concert, which was SO MUCH FUN! I had a blast. We went out to dinner before and then went to the concert in Hartford. Thanks again Patrick! xox

Enough of my rambling, let’s get to the food shall we? My mom has been making the same scones for Lord only knows how long. For as long as I can remember anyways ;-). They are super delicious and you can dress them up or down however you want. You can make them savory, sweet, or more like a muffin. The possibilities are endless! I wanted to share them with you because she made them just recently and they NEVER last very long. She made 2 batches and they were both gone by the following day πŸ˜›

Ingredients for Scones:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup lowfat buttermilk
  • 3 tablespoons orange zest
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 4-5 tablespoons orange juice

Preheat oven to 400ΒΊ

Combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda in a large bowl. Add butter and mix with your fingertips to a coarse meal. Add buttermilk and mix just until combined. Add orange zest.

Transfer dough to a floured board. Roll out dough into a 1″ thick round. Cut each round into 8 wedges and place slightly separated on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush top with egg wash and bake for 15 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Cool on baking sheet. Once cooled take your powdered sugar and add in orange juice one tablespoon at a time until you reach a slightly runny consistency. Drizzle the icing over the scones and cut into individual servings.

If you don’t like icing, just sprinkle some coarse sugar over the scones and it will add an added sweetness to them.

These are delicious and so satisfying. You will be amazed at how you won’t be able to take just one. They are addicting!

I hope you all are having a great week so far!
