Water Cake

Dear New England Drivers,

It is not necessary to drive 12 mph to work when there is a little precipitation on the ground. It is also not safe to SLAM on your brakes as often as you do in slippery conditions. If you just use the pedal on the right to make the car accelerate…you should be good to go.

Sincerely,

A fellow New England Commuter

Holy cow, heeellllooo ice storm! I drove in this morning and it took me an hour and 20 minutes to get into work. It normally takes me about 35 minutes haha. WOW! Thanks Mother New England! Thank goodness I am inside now, for all of you who are located in the New England area, pleeease drive safe!

This recipe is something my mom showed me. She said my great grandmother used to make it and I always love sharing recipes like that with people. This cake is crunchy and gooey and delicious and is the perfect thing for a chocolate craving!

Ingredients for Chocolate Water Cake:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups hot water

In a medium bowl, combine flour, white sugar, 2 tablespoons cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth. Spread in ungreased 9 inch square baking pan.

Combine brown sugar and 4 tablespoons cocoa; sprinkle over batter in the pan. Pour hot water over all; do not stir.

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 35 to 40 minutes. Serve warm.

It might be hard to tell in this picture above, but the bottom of the cake ends up being like a layer of gooey chocolate and then the top ends up being close to a brownie texture. Yum!

Now, I know this isn’t the most gorgeous looking piece of cake above haha. If you let it cool for a bit it will set up nicely and you can cut nice slices of cake, but I just wanted to dig right in…let me tell you, it is great at any temperature! Enjoy!
